Looking Glass House, Hackney, London.
An excavated remodelling of a victorian terrace with a kaliedoscopic array of finishes, undertaken with very close client collaboration.
Rainbird House is a substantial re-working of a four-storey Victorian terraced house including basement, loft, side and rear extensions, the restructuring of rooms and services and detailed interior design (materials, finishes, fixtures and fittings).
The project was to create a new home as a distinctive design led project that would suit the needs of a well-travelled family, with fourth_space commissioned to work across all work stages with the client from concept design to occupation. The project involved excavation and underpinning to increase the existing basement ceiling height to make it habitable, a new front bay, a lowered kitchen area, and ensured that the building fabric was properly sealed against damp and had improved structural stability. The rear extension was a single storey āLā shaped extension in brick and glass that wrapped around the existing Victorian extension and was designed to increase light levels within the property and open up the connection to the garden.
